Does Fema Continuity of Operations Expire
Since 1979, the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) has been helping Americans that find themselves in the middle of a crisis. They've been a powerful force for good in the country helping out citizens who've faced some of the worst disasters in US history. Whether your area's been flattened by a hurricane, an earthquake or is dealing with the effects of a nuclear power plant meltdown, this organization is willing and able to help Americans pick themselves up and get on with their lives. So how do they do their work and how can you benefit from their mission to help?
Help
If you need immediate help, you should always call 9-1-1 but if you're recovering from a disaster, FEMA can help. Contact the American Red Cross or Salvation Army if you're in need of shelter but you can call the FEMA Helpline at any time after an emergency event to ask for assistance. If they're not the correct organization for your needs, they'll put you in touch with the right people. There are other things like housing assistance and help for businesses affected by a disaster which FEMA can help with.
If you feel you need Individual Disaster Assistance, check out FEMA's website to see if your area has been declared in need of assistance. Once you've established that you should find out what FEMA can do to help. If you run a small business that can't trade due to an emergency, you could qualify for a low-interest loan that will pay for your damages. Both renters and homeowners can also benefit from FEMA's help. FEMA isn't allowed to duplicate the help your insurance company is giving you but they can help with items not covered by insurance.
How to Apply
The application process begins through the Disaster Assistance Center (DAC) website, which asks you to input your zip code. This establishes if your area has been hit by a major disaster. This process can begin through the FEMA website as it will link you to DAC's site. If a disaster has been declared, you'll be told all of the types of assistance on offer to citizens in that area of the country. You'll also be able to find your closest hospital, and the contact details for all emergency services in the area can be found there too.
Appealing to FEMA
If you find yourself in the middle of a disaster but FEMA determines that your application for help was "ineligible", you should appeal to them if you're truly in need of assistance. All appeals have to be made in writing. When you write, explain why you believe their decision was incorrect and provide any additional documentation they've requested to support your claim. You'll need to put this down on paper and FEMA can't respond to email, but you can upload your letter through a DAC account.
FEMA Food
Disasters aren't just about housing and rehoming, they also leave families without the basics like food and water. One of the most devastating effects of a storm, an earthquake, flood or other disaster emergency is a lack of food and clean water available to survivors. Unfortunately FEMA can't help with that but the Food and Nutrition Service (FNS) is available. They coordinate with State, local and voluntary organizations to provide food to shelters and to distribute food parcels to households.
Careers with FEMA
If you like the sort of work that FEMA does and would like to become part of the organization, they're always interested in recruiting talented individuals who are willing to challenge themselves and push others. After checking out their site and discovering which career is right for you, all you need to do is to create an account on the site and then follow the instructions in the "How to Apply" section of each job announcement. Apply online by uploading your resume and any supporting documents and then wait in hope of a positive reply.
